About Christian Purity Promise Rings

Christian purity rings, or chastity rings originated in the United States in the 1990s among Christian affiliated with sexual abstinence groups. The rings are sold to adolescents or to parents so that they may be given to their adolescent children as gifts. Many people buy Christian purity promise rings for themselves, to remind them of their commitment to their own self to practice sexual abstinence.

It is intended that wearing a purity ring is accompanied by a religious vow to practice celibacy until marriage. The ring is usually worn on the left ring finger with the implication that the wearer will remain abstinent until it is replaced with a wedding ring. There is no particular style for purity rings; however, many worn by Christian shave a cross in their design in reference to Jesus Christ. Some rings contain a diamond chip or other gemstone and, or may have "Love waits" embossed somewhere on the ring.

The Christian Purity Promise Ring Pledge:

With confidence in His power to strengthen me, I make a promise this day to God, my family, myself, my future spouse and my future children; to remain sexually pure until the day I give myself as a wedding gift to my spouse. I know that God requires this of me, that He loves me, and that He will reward me for my faithfulness, in this life, and in the next.

A Promise of Purity

The most common purity promise is one of abstinence - refraining from sex until marriage. Teenagers with strong Christian values and connections to their church may participate in purity ceremonies to affirm their commitment to abstinence, and a ring is often given to them as a physical symbol of that promise. Abstinence is not the only purity promise ring meaning, however. Other meanings include a vow to refrain from drub abuse or bullying, as well as other behaviors that could tarnish physical or mental purity.

A Promise of Purity

The most popular options include:

* Unopened rose buds or flower blooms

* Christian fish, crosses, or other common symbols

* Initials such as WWJD (What Would Jesus Do) or JMJ (Jesus Mary Joseph)

* True Love Waits rings with the words engraved, carved, or embossed on the band

* Hearts combine with other Christian symbols

Because most purity rings are worn by teens, they are often made from either sterling silver or an inexpensive gold for better durability. More expensive rings may include gemstones, and some beautiful promise rings may incorporate diamonds or birthstones for ever more symbolism.

Purity Ceremonies

Many churches arrange purity programs and ceremonies to encourage young Christians to embrace the values and vows of purity. A program combining Bible study with discussions of relationships, marriage, and loving sex may be arranged to encourage teens to protect their purity, and at the conclusion of the program a special purity blessing ceremony is often held to present the participating teens with purity promise rings.

Different churches may have different types of purity ceremonies. In some churches, the ceremony may be a simple party at the conclusion of a purity program, while other congregations may opt for more elaborate events including youth prayers, a recitation of purity vows, hymns, or a special communion. These more elaborate ceremonies often take place in front of the whole congregation, though a private ceremony can be arranged if desired, since pledging one's purity is a very private and solemn commitment.

Who Gives the Ring?

In most cases, a Christian purity promise ring is given to the individuals invoking the promise either from the sponsoring church or their parents. It is possible, however, for a boyfriend and girlfriend to make such a purity promise together and to then exchange matching promise rings to symbolize their commitment to one another and to their faith. An individual can also give a promise ring to themselves as a visual reminder of their spiritual vows.

Purity Ring Alternatives

Rings are not the best symbols for everyone. An individual who makes a very deep commitment may wish to keep the symbol of their purity vows more private, in which case a locket or pendant that can be worn underneath clothing may be more appropriate. If a ring isn't suitable to an individual's personal style, they may choose a bracelet, wristband, brooch, or other price of jewelry that can be frequently worn. Regardless of what they wear, so long as their promise remains pure it will continue to remind them of the sacred vows they've made.

A Christian purity promise ring can be a powerful symbol of abstinence or other Christian values that the wearer has sworn to uphold. A simple ring t o symbolize something as complex as faith and belief can be a stunning way to demonstrate one's commitment to oneself and to one's faith.
