The History of Promise Rings

The origin of the promise ring dates back to 16th century. In the early days the ring was used as friendship ring. There are even illustrations to date back the promise rings to as early as 1576 AD when marriage was forbidden as a social structure. During this time the promise ring was used as a placeholder until such time the marriage was accepted as a social norm.

In the ancient days the bishops wore the ring as a pledge of their spiritual union with the church. In the 16th century it was more often used as a friendship ring. In the 17th century in Europe the promise rings were used as a symbol of love and friendship. They used their rings to etch something on the woods. It was very common those days to use uncut diamond in the rings. This was popularly called as the scribbling ring because the lovers would use the uncut diamond opening in the ring to etch out their vows on the window panes and on the trees. During the 20th century the women started giving promise rings to the men. It was generally a surprise gift and it depends on the man to accept or deny the offer.

We could see that the promise ring was not just used as a lovers ring but virtually as a symbol for any kind of commitment either physical or platonic. It is used as the pre engagement ring when a couple decides to detained together for eternity they exchange this promise ring to prove their lifelong commitment towards each other. It acts as a symbol for lifelong love and devotion towards each other. In other words it acts as a prelude to marriage.

The promise ring also has another name called the purity ring .The rings are given by the parents to their child. Here the ring symbolizes a promise kept by the child to remain sexually pure until marriage acts as a constant remainder that true love can wait for any long time for sexual relationship. Purity rings can also be given to symbolize a child's pledge to remain substance free. Here the promise ring holds the symbolism of chastity and abstinence.

In the absence of marriage the promise ring can be exchanged as a mutual commitment of unity and monogamy. Good friend exchange promise ring as friendship ring as a token gift for lifelong commitment towards their friendship. Whether the friend is moving away to another country or staying next door, the ring is a symbol to prove that you both are always together for each other.

Modern Promise Rings

What is a modern promise ring? In recent times promise rings are seen as a sign of a commitment. Generally, this can often be a commitment or promise between a couple who are not yet engaged. Promise rings are usually less costly than an engagement ring and often feature heart settings or heart shaped stones. Colorful gems are often used instead of diamonds, to keep the rings more cost effective, and also to look less like an engagement ring.

However, diamond promise rings are also very popular. It really depends on the taste of the person you are giving the ring too, and the depth of the relationship. Being more expensive, a diamond promise ring is going to imply more of a commitment to marriage, at some time in the future.

The style of promise rings

Promise rings can be like any other ring and there are many designs available on the market. A very common design is that of the heart and as it is a symbol of love lovers buy it more often. An interlocked heart is a very commonly promise ring because it exactly communicates its' meaning.

Engravings are also done on promise rings. Particularly, gold engraved promise rings are considered the right choice for sharing a promise between a couple. These engraved promise rings are also called poesy rings. Various promises and sentiments can be engraved on the ring. A typical French promise ring would have "Vous et nul autre" engraved which means "you and no other".

Promise rings are usually simplistic in design and may also have diamonds studded in them. Many use three stone diamond rings but the stone sizes are usually smaller than the one used in the engagement rings.

Many other classic designs other than the heart are also used as promise rings.

Promise rings can be worn on any finger, but those symbolizing Pre engagement are worn on the left ring finger. There are two schools of thought regarding the origin of the ring finger. A logical reason is that the ring finger is in between two other fingers and a thumb and so the ring is protective. Another romantic belief is that the vena amori, or the 'vein of love', runs from the 3rd finger to the heart and so it's considered the wedding ring finger.
