A Brief Promise Ring History

The current trend of promise rings have developed from several different traditions. One of those traditions actually dates back to Biblical times. Back in those days, there were betrothals between families stating that a daughter of one family would marry the son of another family. This was an actual contract that the family signed in public that was part of the law.

The marriage usually did not take place until several months or even a year after the public contract went into place. When the betrothal happened, the man would give the lady a ring to wear as a sign of the contract and a promise of marriage until the actual wedding took place. Sometimes, the man would not have even met the lady until presenting her with the ring.

Promise ring history also stems back to the 16th and 17th century with the exchange of something called a scribbling ring. These rings were exchanged to show a sign of love or friendship between two people. This is mainly where the modern day promise ring came from. The rings were set with uncut diamond crystals, into which couples used to etch romantic quotes and sayings. These rings most closely resemble the type of diamond promise rings that are available on the market today.

Back in the 1950's and 60's men used to give their girlfriends their class ring or fraternity pin to let others know that they were dating. This is another tradition in which promise rings come from. The class rings and fraternity pins in no way were as extravagant as the promise rings of today are. Most of the time the pins and rings were given back if the couple broke up, which is not always the case with modern promise rings.

Promise rings really started to gain popularity starting in the 1990's. Younger couples, and even teenagers started to give their significant other rings to show that they promised to marry them someday. Some people started to call promise rings pre-engagement rings as well. These pieces of jewelry can range from a simple gold band with an inscription to a pretty expensive diamond ring.

In the past couple of years promise rings have become just not a gift between a serious couple. There are also promise rings, also called purity rings that are given from a parent to a child. These purity rings can also be bought by the person as well. These rings represent the fact that the person wearing the ring has made a commitment to not have sex before marriage. These are popular with both females and males.

Even though the promise ring history may be made up of several different traditions, it remains that they represent a commitment or vow to someone. They are the physical expressions of love, friendship, promise, commitment, and so many other things.
